With 204-beds, it is the third largest of Duke Health’s four hospitals and offers a comprehensive array of services, including cancer, cardiovascular, neuroscience, advanced gastrointestinal, and wound healing care. Oncology Data Specialists, Certified, are data information experts that capture a complete history, diagnosis, treatment, and health status for every eligible cancer patient. These data specialists provide essential information to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials to better monitor and advance cancer treatments, conduct research and improve cancer prevention and screening programs. Oncology Data Specialists, Certified work with physicians, administrators, researchers and health care planners to provide support for cancer program development, ensure compliance of reporting standards, and serve as a valuable resource for cancer information with the ultimate goal of preventing and controlling cancer. Responsibilities • Abstract a wide range of medical data from the EMR and code it in compliance with data standard sets established by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer, and the NC Central Cancer Registry. • Capture medical history, physical findings, screening information, occupation, and any history of a previous cancer. • Document diagnostic findings, types, dates, and results of procedures used to diagnose cancer. • Identify cancer primary site, cell type, and extent of disease. • Record cancer treatment details including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone, or immunotherapy. • Collect patient identification information such as age, gender, race/ethnicity, birthplace, and residence. • Provide annual follow-up information regarding patient status, recurrence, and treatment. • Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, surgical and radiation techniques. • Participate in continuing education programs to learn about new chemo and hormone drugs. • Apply ICD-10, FORDS, AJCC, and SEER coding guidelines to inpatient and outpatient diagnoses and procedures. • Participate in the development of coding policies and procedures. • Independently research and solve complex coding problems and assist with special projects as required. • Ensure adherence to data management protocols as set forth in state and national requirements, departmental standards, and guidelines set forth by the DCI Cancer Committee. Requirements • An Associate's Degree is required for those certified on or after 2015 requirement. • Two years of experience working as an Oncology Data Specialist, Certified in a Hospital or Central Tumor Registry is required. • Oncology Data Specialist certification required. Nice-to-haves • Preferred Associate's Degree in Cancer Registry Management or Associate's Degree in Cancer Information Management. • 5 years of experience as an Oncology Data Specialist, Certified, preferred.
